It is a scintillating novel especially for a first attempt and I have heard that it is apparently 8 years in the making. The story is first class and looks set to become a great epic. The characters themselves are first-rate. And the best part is that it sheds light on the potential medieval society that existed prior to the Crusades which gives a superb chance to the audience to try and relate to the lives and motivations of the people who existed at the time and helped create history. I recommend it to everybody as a must-read because in my opinion, no study of history is ever complete without understanding the potential mindset and motivations of the people who made this history. This novel is a great beginning for such an eventuality. And the best part of Scott's story so far which is somewhat unique is that there are potentially more than two protagonists..In simple words, the reader has freedom in choosing who to root for..This again increases audience immersion..Therefore it is an awesome debut..On the lines of Forsyth with Day of the Jackal..Product details

To Shine With Honor is an excellent set-piece drama that follows the lives and adventures of a minor French noble family on the eve of the First Crusade. Flawlessly researched, this story introduces the reader to “the little people” of 11th Century Europe – if you are looking for a novel on the great and the famous, you will need to look elsewhere. Mr. Amis’ characters in many ways represent the innumerable nameless and faceless ones who made up the vast majority of those who, when a Pope called in 1095, left behind everything they had ever known and marched off by the thousands to rescue a holy city on the far side of the world. While history only remembers these people as nameless members of armies, campaigns, and pilgrimages, Mr. Amis’ brings them to life as real and relatable people who hope, dream, love, struggle, and suffer. Although nearly every character is fictional, the quality of the research performed for the setting is superb and what few historical licenses can be found are so slight as to be virtually imperceptible save for the author’s own admirable admission in his notes. For anyone wishing to gain familiarity with the lives of the ordinary people from this period of history, To Shine With Honor is a must-read. While there are still two more volumes to come in this series, I have very high hopes from what I have seen of the first installment.

This is an awesome book describing the good and bad of the knighthood days...articulate and extremely interesting making this time period come to life!!!
To Shine with Honor Coming of Age is the first book in a trilogy that will follow key characters from this volume on the First Crusade to the Holy Land. The book sets the scene for what is to come. Unlike most books on the First Crusade, the book essentially ends rather than begins with Pope Urban’s call to arms ― and this is precisely what makes this book appealing and valuable.
Amis’ book sheds light on who the first crusaders were and what they were like by taking the time to introduce some archetypical first crusaders ― before they become crusaders. By showing us who these men were before the seed of going on a great, armed pilgrimage to the Holy Land was planted, the book provides a baseline against which we will (hopefully) be able to measure the impact of the journey East, the clash with Islam and the encounter with the Holy Land.
Rather than write about kings and dukes, Amis has chosen to focus his attention on the very backbone of feudal society the knightly class. Knights were what made the armies of the West valuable to the Eastern Roman Empire, and they were largely responsible for the West’s increasing self-confidence as the Muslim invasions of the 8th, 9th and 10th centuries were systematically pushed back from France, Italy, Sicily and (slowly) Spain as well. But equally important, this was a period of transition when the rituals and traditions of knighthood were still fluid and nascent. It was a period when the distinctions between classes were blurred and upward mobility still possible by a variety of means. Amis illustrates this by showing how the central family of the book is making its way in the world through marriage, ransoms, and increasing literacy.
Amis deserves praise for showing the complexity of this society and depicting the increasing standard of living of the period. He includes prospering peasants, noblemen-turned-merchant, respected and skilled craftsmen, miller’s daughters and professional soldiers in his book, giving them all voices and roles. Rather than falling into stereotypes of “brutal nobles and oppressed peasants” ― or the equally ridiculous clichés of “knights in shining armor” ― Amis shows good and bad lords, worthy and less worthy commoners.
The complexity of society is reflected in the complexity of the characters. The brothers are distinct, each with their own strengths and weaknesses, and they undergo often surprising character development. Most impressive, even the local “robber baron” is not a cartoon “evil” character but rather a loving husband, capable of remorse. In short, the characters have depth and are sufficiently attractive to keep the readers interest throughout.
Likewise, although this is not a thriller with a breathless pace, the plot takes a number of unexpected twists well designed to keep the reader’s attention. The descriptions are evocative without being tedious. Some of the details, particularly of architecture and construction but also military equipment, are very useful and add valuable color.
Admittedly, Amis’ standing as a first-time novelist at times shows in his otherwise solid work. There are some inconsistencies of plot and characterization, as well as some petty inaccuracies and curious anachronisms which will annoy purists. Amis’ ideas of how orderly, regulated and hierarchical French society was in this period is also certainly open to debate, but on the whole Amis presents an internally consistent interpretation of France at the end of the 11th century, which makes for a good read. I look forward to following the trilogy and anticipate that Amis’ skills as a novelist will show growth with the second volume of To Shine with Honor.
I am no scholar of this time period in history, although as an architect I am drawn to any description of castles and especially to the story of the architect Joseph. The commingling of the various classes of people, from the landed nobility to the poor honest peasantry, gives a much different and more fluid picture of the society in those days. Likewise, I suppose I thought that being a knight meant that one was involved in only mortal combat, or jousts, or riotous feasting. Again, Amis portrays a more complex set of circumstances than I supposed, and gives us the benefit of well-drawn characters whose actions and insights are much more engaging and approachable than the stereotypes I once imagined. So the novel works well for me as a good story, a good history lesson and as a new field for my imagination. I know it's good in that I am already projecting ahead and wondering, if not also worrying, about what will happen to my favorites in the pages and years ahead. I am eagerly looking forward to the second volume.
