I will start this review with an honest declaration; I am the author's aunt. Because I love my nephew very much I bought his book.....about fishing. I wasn't sure I would read the entire book, just parts I thought, so I could discuss his book with him. Here is the interesting part, I kept reading. The book was not only informative, it was really a pleasant read. Matt does a great job mixing science, personal stories, and some well thought out information to help anyone interested in off shore fishing get started well ahead of the game. One of my favorite parts was his way of referencing sliced bread. If you are even REMOTELY interested in off shore fishing, ( or you know someone who is) read the book. You'll see, you'll have fun.....even if you never go fishing.Product details

One of the best fishing books I've read. I've always wanted to catch a big tuna after watching that TV show about catching big tuna. Reading this book made me think it was possible, so I charted a boat and went fishing. I caught two tuna over 20lbs.
My husband enjoyed this book but said it didn’t really teach him anything that he didn’t already know. But that depends on the person.
Chose 5 stars because this is a book that goes over everything. I have the ebook which I think is better than the hard copy due to the ability to seamlessly access the videos and websites/articles with amplifying information.
MUST READ FOR SPORTS FISHERMAN!! My good friend Matt Steiger, a physicist, wrote an incredible book about everything you need to know about fishing offshore in San Diego. If you've ever read a San Diego Edible, you have come across his articles. Matt is a fishing fanatic and is the only person in all my years at the Hillcrest market that has pressed me for a crewman job fishing in Bristol Bay! Whether it's a specific fish you're after or the different chartering trip options that are offered its all covered. I finally have a sound game plan on my next trip. GREAT BOOK!!
This book is a beautifully written manual on how to get started deep sea fishing. It's filled with detailed advice and insights on everything from choosing a boat to baiting a hook. Matt is a scientist as well as a professional technical writer, and that comes through in the clarity of his writing and the organization of the book. But he is also a great story teller and an experienced fisherman. So the book is easy to read, and peppered with entertaining personal vignettes that illustrate important points about techniques and etiquette of fishing with other anglers. There are a lot of stories on these pages that can help the reader avoid some mistakes the author has made. The result is a book that will help you get the most out of fishing blue water off the Southern California coast.
